By the Triogue’s Edge

Inspired by the lone heron standing by the River Triogue in Port Laoise that I see as I walk up to dialysis.

I stand beside the quiet stream
Where Triogue’s waters glide;
The mallards chatter in their team,
But I keep to the side.

The park hums soft with passing feet,
With prams and dogs and play;
Yet here upon my chosen seat
I watch the drifting day.

For I am shaped for patient hours,
For stillness, reed, and stone;
Though others pair in sheltered bowers,
My vigil is my own.

But sometimes on a silver dawn
A wing I know draws near;
A shadow skims the waking lawn—
Then fades, but leaves me clear.

So let them wander two by two
Along the lake’s bright rim;
I trust the sky to tell me who
Will share the dusk with him.

Stained-glass artwork in Celtic colours showing a lone heron standing at the edge of a calm lake, with mallards and coots drifting on golden water. A cloaked figure sits quietly on the bank beneath a tree, all framed by intricate green and gold knotwork.
