Name. Covenant. Praise.

New Year’s Day in the Christian calendar invites us into a quieter beginning than the world expects. While fireworks fade and resolutions rush in, the Church turns its gaze to something far smaller and far more tender: an eight‑day‑old child, named and marked in the flesh. The Feast of the Circumcision and Naming of Christ reminds us that God’s renewal begins not with spectacle but with vulnerability, covenant, and identity spoken aloud.

For those of us who navigate the world with minds that move differently, this feast carries a particular resonance. It speaks of a God who enters human experience at its most fragile; a God who receives a name before He speaks a word; a God who honours the body, the story, and the way of being that each of us carries. In this moment of turning the year, we are invited not to reinvent ourselves but to remember who we are and whose we are.

This hymn was written for The Mindful Year: Hymns for Christmastide as a prayer for beginnings—grounded in the Holy Name, shaped by covenant mercy, and open to the slow, steady work of grace. May it accompany you into the year ahead with gentleness, courage, and the assurance that Christ meets us in the particularity of our lives and minds.

1. At dawn of this new-circled year,
We greet the Holy Name:
The Child who bears our flesh and fear,
Yet Love’s eternal flame.

2. The mark of covenant He bears,
A sign of mercy’s claim;
The God who hears His people’s prayers
Now bears a human name.

3. Jesus, the Name that heals our sin,
The Name by which we stand;
The Word made flesh who dwells within
And holds us by the hand.

4. So bless our days, O Christ our Lord,
Our endings and our starts;
Renew the vows we once outpoured,
And write them on our hearts.

5. At turning year, Your grace we trace,
Your faithfulness we see;
O Name of Jesus, Prince of Peace,
Be all our hope to be.

6. Praise to the Father, Source of grace,
And to the Son once named;
The Spirit, breath in every place,
Be evermore acclaimed.
