In whispered winds You speak again
1.
In whispered winds You speak again,
Your covenant made new;
Not carved on stone of Sinai’s height,
But written deep and true.
2.
You trace Your promise on our hearts
Like sunlight on the dew;
As meadowsweet in summer fields,
Your mercy rises too.
3.
The shadows flee the morning light,
The ancient rites give way;
The tent of cloth and silver bright
Dissolves in perfect day.
4.
No teacher need instruct the way,
For You Yourself draw near;
In curlew’s cry and blackbird’s hymn
Your living voice is clear.
5.
From ringfort mound to holy well,
Your faithfulness remains;
You walk the quiet paths we tread
And bless our furrowed plains.
6.
Forget our sins, remember us
With kindness evermore;
A covenant of steadfast love
From age to age restored.
7.
So lead us, Christ, by ash and oak,
By river, hill, and flame;
Till all creation knows Your peace
And honours Your new Name.
8.
To You, O Holy One of old,
Be honour, strength, and praise;
The God who keeps His covenant sure,
Now and through all our days.

Theme: Hebrews 8, The New Covenant.
Reflection
Hebrews 8 speaks of the great promise of the new covenant: God’s law no longer written on tablets of stone, but inscribed upon the human heart. It is a vision not of distant religion but of intimate knowledge of God—
“They shall all know me,
from the least of them to the greatest.”
While writing this hymn, I found myself imagining that promise unfolding within the Irish landscape. Just as sunlight traces the dew across a summer meadow, so God’s mercy quietly writes itself upon our lives. The old shadows of temple and sacrifice give way to the living presence of Christ, who walks the paths we tread.
In the cry of curlew, the song of blackbird, and the stillness of holy wells and ancient ringforts, creation itself becomes a reminder of the covenant that endures. The God who spoke at Sinai now speaks within the heart, forgiving, remembering, and drawing us ever closer.
“Like sunlight on the dew,
God writes His covenant gently upon the heart.”
This hymn is an attempt to hear that promise again: a covenant not of fear or distance, but of steadfast love written deep within us.

From age to age restored.
