One Faith, One Hope, One Lord: A Hymn for Unity

A richly coloured Celtic-style stained-glass window. At the top, the Holy Spirit appears as a white dove descending in radiant flames of gold and red above a cross, while storm clouds and lightning break apart around praying believers. The central scene shows saints of the early Church—Patrick with a crozier, David, Ninian, and Augustine—standing near a glowing holy well and Celtic cross in a green island landscape with churches and water. At the bottom, a gathered community surrounds an altar with an open Bible, chalice, and cross, symbolising the Church united in worship. Celtic knotwork frames the window, and a banner reads “One Faith · One Hope · One Lord.”

The Cross That Gathers All

O Holy Spirit, come with fire,
And rouse Your Church to truth again;
Let every heart in Christ’s desire
Turn from the paths that wound and stain.
Where factions rise and schisms tear,
Speak with the thunder of Your call:
That all who claim Your Name may dare
To seek the Cross that gathers all.

Recall the faith our elders knew—
The saints who prayed on wind‑swept shore;
Whose Celtic light, both strong and true,
Still bids us walk in Christ once more.
Let those who meet in distant lands
Remember wells where grace was found;
The ancient hope that still withstands,
Where Scripture, prayer, and peace abound.

Patrick who lit the western flame,
And David, steadfast, pure in heart;
With Ninian’s zeal and Augustine’s aim,
Recall us to the ancient start.
Let honour crown the ones You send
To shepherd, guard, and guide Your fold;
And may the Word, our Shepherd-Friend,
Bind every heart in love of old.

Raise up Your Church to stand in light,
Unmoved by fear or faction’s claim;
Let truth be spoken with Your might,
And love burn brighter than our shame.
Lord, heal Your Church; make one our voice;
Restore the bonds that strife has marred.
In Christ alone we now rejoice—
One faith, one hope, one risen Lord.

Reflection

Overnight, I wrote a hymn praying for unity within the Anglican Communion. In a time when voices grow sharp and divisions deepen, the Church still belongs to Christ. This hymn calls on the Holy Spirit to heal what has been torn, to recall us to the faith of the saints, and to gather us again around the Cross—

one faith,
one hope,
one risen Lord
