A Hymn of Soil, Saint, and Sacrament – “Here the fields of Erin whisper” (87 87 D)

Christ Our Bread in Erin’s Valleys

Here the fields of Erin whisper
Of the Love that does not cease;
Christ our Bread in rain and sunlight,
Christ our Cup of healing peace.
From the Barrow’s quiet waters
To the western ocean’s roar,
You are present in creation,
Blessing all for evermore.

Saints who walked these hills before us
Lit their fires against the night;
Still their prayers in wind and heather
Turn our wandering hearts to light.
Brigid spreads her cloak of welcome,
Patrick lifts Your praise again;
At Your table all are gathered—
Stranger, seeker, foe, and friend.

In the hush of mountain valleys,
In the peatland’s earthy breath,
You renew us with Your Spirit,
Stronger far than sin or death.
In the cup we taste Your mercy,
In the bread we meet Your face;
Christ who feeds the whole creation,
Lead us on in truth and grace.

Bind us, Lord, in woven circles—
Knot of love that has no end;
North and south and east and westward,
All in You begin and blend.
May this feast of holy presence
Shape our lives in peace and care,
Till Your kingdom’s Celtic sunrise
Fills the world with light and prayer.

Reflection

Christ Our Bread in Erin’s Valleys is an ecumenical Eucharistic hymn rooted in the landscapes and spiritual imagination of Ireland. Drawing on the imagery of river and ocean, mountain and peatland, it weaves together sacramental theology with the Celtic sense of creation as a living sign of God’s presence.

With its imagery of woven circles and unending knots, the text echoes Celtic art and spirituality, expressing unity without uniformity. It is offered as a song of welcome, reconciliation, and hope—a prayer that the feast of Christ’s presence may shape our lives in peace and care, and that God’s kingdom may rise like a Celtic sunrise over all the earth.

The hymn gives voice to a faith shaped by the fields and waters of Erin—from the quiet flow of the Barrow to the western sea—affirming Christ as Bread and Cup, present not only at the altar but in the whole of creation. In remembering saints who walked these hills before us, such as Brigid and Patrick, it honours the shared Christian heritage of Ireland while inviting all traditions to gather at one table.

Stained glass window depicting Irish Christian themes: Saint Brigid and Saint Patrick stand beneath a radiant sunrise over sea and green hills, with a rainbow and dove above. In the centre are Eucharistic symbols—a chalice of wine, a round host marked “IHS,” and a loaf of bread—set beside flowing rivers and fields of Erin. Celtic knotwork frames the scene, with a small church in the landscape and intricate patterns symbolising unity and eternity.
