🌙 Psalm 139: The Autistic Psalm

Coming back to Compline tonight as a Benedictine feels like returning to a rhythm that knows me better than I know myself. The Office doesn’t ask me to perform or adapt; it simply invites me to rest in its steady cadence. And in that space, Psalm 139 stands out as the psalm that speaks most directly to the autistic soul.

“You have searched me out and known me.”

Those words land with a particular tenderness when the world often misunderstands or misreads. Psalm 139 doesn’t demand that I translate myself. It declares that God already understands the whole pattern—the intensity, the focus, the overwhelm, the beauty.

“Even darkness is no darkness with you.”

For a mind that can be flooded by sensory noise or tangled in replay, this is not poetic abstraction; it is reassurance. God is not disoriented by the shadows or the complexity. God is at home there.

“I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

Tonight, that line feels like a quiet affirmation that my wiring is not a mistake but part of the deliberate artistry of God.

Returning to the Office as a Benedictine is returning to stability—to a rhythm that holds me when the day has been too much. And Psalm 139 is the heart of that return: the reminder that I am known, held, and understood, exactly as I am.

A stained-glass window inspired by Psalm 139. At the top, Jesus with a golden halo gently places his hands on the head of a bowed person in blue, conveying comfort and blessing. Surrounding them are a crescent moon, stars, and a bright sun in deep blue and gold tones. Text in banners reads, “You have searched me and known me,” “Even darkness is no darkness with you,” and “Fearfully & wonderfully made.” Below, a small abbey church sits in a landscape with a river and sunset cross. In the corner, colorful puzzle pieces appear beside the title, “Psalm 139: The Autistic Psalm.” The overall style is warm, luminous stained glass in rich blues, golds, reds, and greens.
