At NeuroDivine, we know well that the road of faith is seldom straight. It bends and wanders, like a river finding its way to the sea. “Forty Days the Path Before Us” is a Lenten hymn for pilgrims of every kind—for those who travel by valley and high hill, through bogland hush and bright shoreline, at their own steady pace.
Drawing from the well of Celtic spirituality, the hymn remembers that Christ is no stranger to the wild places. He walks the barren ground and the blooming field alike. The Spirit moves about us—ancient and tender—circling like a curlew over open land, calling us gently back to the light when we’ve lost our bearings.
For a community like NeuroDivine, Lent is not a test to be passed, nor a burden to be borne. It is a turning homeward. It is learning again how to breathe, how to trust, how to let grace flow through every difference and every gift. The cross stands at the centre—not as threat, but as meeting place—binding earth and heaven, holding all things in love.
And so we set out together for these forty days, knowing Christ is before us on the road, beside us in the shadow, and within us in the quiet of the heart—leading us, in God’s good time, toward Easter morning.
Forty days the path before us
winds through valley, hill, and shore;
Christ who walked the wild and barren
guides our feet to trust once more.
In the hush of bog and bracken,
in the cry of curlew’s flight,
Spirit circles, ancient, tender,
calling us to walk in light.
Forty days of turning homeward,
like the river seeking sea;
grace that shaped our Celtic story
flows through all we’re called to be.
Mark us with the cross of starlight,
bind us in the knot of love;
Christ, the centre, ever holding
earth below and heaven above.
Forty days of fasting, praying,
learning how to breathe again;
stones become the seeds of mercy,
desert blooms with hope’s refrain.
Christ beside us in the shadows,
Christ before us on the way;
Christ within our hearts’ deep silence,
rising with the Easter day.

Description of the image. A vibrant stained-glass artwork depicting Jesus with arms outstretched beneath a sun and crescent moon, surrounded by a pastoral landscape with a river, hills, and a small church. A dove flies nearby, and two figures stand together in the distance. A large Celtic-style cross with intricate knotwork sits at the center. Below are scenes of praying hands with flowers, a glowing cross on a hill, three crosses at sunset, and an open tomb at sunrise. The design features rich jewel tones—greens, blues, golds, and purples—with ornate Celtic patterns framing the composition.
