Word. Refuge. Faith.

“Write Your Word Upon Our Hearts” is a hymn rooted in Deuteronomy 11, Psalm 31, Romans 1 and 3, and Matthew 7, the readings for today (Proper 4) in the Church of Ireland. It prays that God’s Word would be inscribed not only on stone, but within our lives—shaping faith, grounding us in Christ’s righteousness, and forming us as doers of the Word.

Drawing on imagery of standing stones, sheltering hills, and ancient places of prayer, the hymn connects covenant promise with lived obedience. It is a song of trust, justification by faith, and steadfast hope across generations.

Write your Word upon our hearts,
Carve it deep as ogham lines;
Set it fast like standing stones
Where your grace and judgment shine.
Bless the path that lies before,
Guide our steps from day to day;
Be the truth beneath our wandering,
Be the light upon our way.

Be our refuge and our strength,
Rock and fortress ever sure;
When the nets of fear surround,
In your mercy keep us sure.
Into your hands we yield
All our spirits, worn and weak;
Like the barrow hushed at dusk,
Let your peace within us speak.

Not by striving, not by works,
Is your righteousness made known;
But through faith in Christ alone
We are claimed before your throne.
In the gospel’s living power
All the weary find their rest;
From the Shannon to the sea
Let your righteousness be blessed.

Make us doers of your Word,
Builders on the rock that stands;
Shape our lives like seasoned wood
Formed and held within your hands.
When the storms of doubt arise,
When the winds of trial are strong,
Hold us fast upon the Rock;
Be the heartbeat of our song.

Bind your Word upon our minds,
On the doorway of our homes;
Write it on our hearts and hands
Wherever, Lord, your people roam.
Bless our children and their seed
While your covenant endures;
From first light on bogland hills
To dusk at Clonmacnoise’ shores.
