From Morning Light to Setting Sun

Sexagesima (the Second Sunday before Lent) draws our attention to the quiet, faithful work of God—the sowing of the seed, the shaping of hearts, the long patience of love that bears fruit in its time.

Before we strive, before we worry, before the dawn itself, God is already at work.

This hymn is a prayer of trust rooted in creation. Hills shaped by care. Streams running free. Birds fed, fields clothed, stars set in their courses. The same God who tends the earth also tends our lives—often unseen, often slowly, always faithfully.

In the Gospel reading, the seed is scattered generously. Some falls on hard ground, some is choked by fear or distraction, some takes root and grows. Sexagesima reminds us that fruitfulness is not something we force. It is something we receive, when we rest in God’s sustaining love.

So we let go of anxious hearts.
We release tomorrow’s fears.
We trust the One who guides the turning world.

From morning light to setting sun,
from age to age,
God’s love endures—constant, kind, and true.

May this season help us become good soil:
open, patient, and ready to receive what God is already growing among us.

Before the dawn first brushed the sky,
Your Spirit breathed the air;
You shaped the hills, the streams ran free,
Creation born of care.

Your love endures from age to age,
So constant, kind, and true;
From morning light to setting sun,
We place our trust in you.

You spread the fields with dancing light,
Set stars in midnight’s dome;
You whispered life through ash and oak,
And made the earth our home.

Refrain

You feed the birds on bog and shore,
Clothe heather on the hill;
So calm our restless, anxious hearts
To trust your quiet will.

Refrain

No fear for what tomorrow brings,
No striving for the day;
For as you tend the turning world,
You guide us on our way.

Refrain

So let our lives give thanks and praise
For mercies never done;
Creation sings from age to age—
Your love has always won.

Refrain
