Seedtime. Light. Pilgrimage.

This hymn is offered as a prayer for the turning of the year, when winter loosens its grip and the first signs of new life appear in field, garden, and soul. Rooted in the landscapes of Kildare and shaped by the rhythms of early spring, it gives thanks for creation renewed and for God’s living presence among us. Drawing on images of seedtime, light, pilgrimage, and holy fire, it invites us to rise with the season into hope, faith, and restoration.

God of morn and thawing furrows,
Breath of life in field and lawn,
You renew the earth’s first whisper,
Waking spring across the dawn.
Snowdrops gleam like quiet blessings,
White as promise, pure and small;
Daffodils lift golden trumpets—
Spring’s bright heralds to us all.

You who guard the plains of Kildare,
Where the whiteways shine with dew,
Stir the buds on ash and hawthorn,
Call the skylark into blue.
By Pass Bridge, near the High Bridge span,
Where the Barrow’s waters glide,
Locks and aqueduct bear witness
To your presence at our side.

Christ who walks our roads of memory,
Christ who meets us where we stand,
Be the warmth within our shadows,
Be the greening of our land.
As the light grows ever stronger,
Guide our hearts to rise with you;
Make our lives like springtime blossoms—
Faith made bright and fresh and true.

Spirit, flame of holy Brigid,
Fire that glows through Erin’s night,
Keep us steadfast, ever hopeful,
Kindled by your gentle light.
On the banks where rushes whisper,
On the paths the pilgrims tread,
Let your breath renew creation—
Life restored from winter’s bed.
