Wells. Flow. Baptise.

The Baptism of the Lord marks a threshold in the life of Jesus— a moment when he steps into the waters of the Jordan, blessed by his cousin John and revealed as God’s beloved Son. In Irish tradition, water, light, and the turning of seasons speak of renewal and calling. This hymn draws on those Celtic symbols to help us enter the mystery of Christ’s baptism and to renew our own baptismal hope.

1
At Jordan’s flowing waters bright,
your Son stood in the morning light;
John’s hand outstretched, the heavens stirred,
the Spirit came upon your Word.
A dove of peace in circling grace,
a triskele of the Three-in-One,
the river sang of life renewed,
and hope rose shining with the sun.

2
O Christ, you stepped in earth’s cold stream,
a threshold to your holy dream;
you blessed the depths where shadows lie,
and raised our hearts to hear your cry.
Like ancient wells in Ireland’s fields,
your mercy springs where pilgrims stand;
you cleanse, restore, and call us home
to walk your way through every land.

3
O Breath of God, O Spirit free,
move now upon your people’s sea;
as reeds along the Barrow bend,
so shape our lives to love and mend.
In every place where waters flow,
in every soul you claim as child,
renew the vows that make us yours,
and lead us through the desert wild.

4
O Father, source of all our days,
receive our song, receive our praise;
your voice once thundered over foam,
and still it calls your children home.
Baptise our hearts in light and truth,
our lives in justice, peace, and care;
that we, reborn in Christ your Son,
may shine your love everywhere.
