This hymn‑poem was written during a recent dialysis session, shaped in the quiet rhythm of machines and the steady care of those who watch over us. It grew out of a musical faith, yet it is offered for everyone—those who sing their prayers and those who speak them, those who find comfort in melody and those who meet God in silence.
Whether read aloud or sung to a familiar tune, these words give thanks for the community of care that surrounds us: nurses, doctors, families, fellow patients, and all whose skill and compassion sustain life. It is a prayer for courage in the long hours, gratitude for the science that supports us, and trust in the God who is present even in the hum of monitors and the waiting of each day.
Hours of healing.
God of healing, God of mercy,
present in each anxious hour,
You are near in tubes and monitors,
grace within the hum of power.
Through the skill of those who tend us,
through the watch of night and day,
You renew our failing waters,
hold our fear, and clear our way.
Bless the nurses, calm and steadfast,
hands that steady, hearts that guide;
Bless the doctors, wise in judgement,
standing always at our side.
Bless the teams whose quiet labour
keeps the fragile rhythms true;
In their care Your love is working,
making all things strong and new.
Bless the families who journey,
bearing burdens not their own;
Those who wait with patient courage,
those who keep the hope-light shown.
In their love we glimpse Your promise,
in their strength, Your steadfast grace;
Through their presence, gently offered,
we find peace within this place.
Bless the patients who surround us,
companions on this winding way;
Those who share the silent hours,
those who lift our hearts each day.
In their stories, tears, and laughter,
in the courage they reveal,
You create a caring community
where the weary learn to heal.
When the waiting feels unending,
when the weariness is long,
You remain our hope and refuge,
still our breath and lift our song.
In the chair, the ward, the silence,
You are with us, holding fast;
Faithful God of every moment,
present future, present past.
So we thank You for the science,
for the wisdom shared and grown;
For the gift of life extended,
for the strength not ours alone.
May our days be shaped by kindness,
may our hearts learn how to see
all the grace that flows among us,
love’s unending remedy.
