On the sixth day of Christmas, the calendar leads us to a quiet figure whose story glimmers at the edges of winter light. St Egwin of Worcester is remembered as a pastor who sought peace, a pilgrim who trusted grace, and a founder whose vision was shaped by the Mother of God. His feast, resting between the manger and the turning of the year, invites us to notice how holiness often grows in the in‑between places — the days when the world is still, and the Christ‑child’s light has only just begun to unfold.
This hymn is offered as a way of honouring that gentle witness. It weaves together the brightness of Bethlehem, the tenderness of Mary’s guidance at Evesham, and the steadfast hope that marks these middle days of Christmas. May it help us listen for the quiet saints who teach us how to walk with mercy, and may it draw us deeper into the light that continues to dawn.
1.
In Bethlehem’s still‑shining night,
We praise the Child who is our Light;
And in that glow your servant stood,
Saint Egwin, steadfast, wise, and good.
2.
While angels’ songs still fill the air,
He taught your people how to care;
A shepherd formed by Christ the Lamb,
Who walked in peace through Worcester’s span.
3.
Where Mary showed her guiding grace,
He marked the ground as holy place;
And Christmas hope took root and grew
In Evesham’s walls, both strong and true.
4.
In winter’s days we learn again
How God draws near to weary men;
So Egwin’s life becomes our sign
Of mercy born at Christmas‑time.
5.
O Christ, whose birth renews the earth,
Grant us such faith, such humble worth;
That, like Saint Egwin, we may be
A cradle for your charity.
6.
All glory, Jesus, born this morn,
To Father, Spirit — ever one;
With saints who praise your holy name,
We join their song with glad acclaim.
