NeuroDivine

celebrating neurodivergence and spirituality

Eagle. Word. Friend.

In the days that follow Christmas, the Church turns our attention to the saints who stood closest to the mystery of Christ. Yesterday we remembered St Stephen, the first martyr; today we honour St John the Evangelist—the Beloved Disciple, witness of the Word made flesh.

Here in Monasterevin, our parish church bears St John’s name, yet his feast so often slips past us in the glow of Christmas. This year, I wanted to mark the day with something new: a hymn in celebration of St John’s witness and tenderness.

As I wrote, the familiar strains of St Columba shaped the rhythm in my mind, with Ballerma as a fitting alternative—both well-loved tunes in St John’s. I offer this hymn as a small gift for our patron’s feast, and as a prayer that his clarity, courage, and love may continue to guide us.

1.
O Word of God, in darkness born,
Whose light no night can bind,
You called your friend to see your face,
And speak your heart and mind.

2.
As eagle rising into dawn,
He soared where few had trod;
He traced your glory, full of grace,
The very life of God.

3.
Beloved Christ, whom John adored,
Whose love cast out all fear,
Draw us into your resting place,
Where every heart comes near.

4.
Still let your witness shape our own,
Your truth in us take flight;
That we, like him, may bear your name
In steadfast, tender light.

5.
O Word made flesh, our Christmas joy,
Whose mercy has no end,
With John we praise the Trinity—
Our life, our hope, our friend.
