A Prayer in the Dialysis Chair, in the Spirit of St Benedict

Crucifix Illustration

O Divine Healer,
You who dwell in silence and song,
In the ticking of machines and the quiet of the afternoon,
Be present with me now.

As the blood flows and the hours pass,
Let this chair become my cloister,
This room my chapel,
This time my offering.

Teach me, like Benedict,
To sanctify the ordinary—
To find You in the rhythm of treatment,
In the kindness of nurses,
In the patience of waiting.

Let my stillness be prayer,
My breath a hymn,
My endurance a psalm.

Grant me humility to accept what is,
Stability to remain faithful in the long hours,
And obedience to the wisdom of care.

May I greet each session not with dread,
But with quiet reverence,
Knowing You are here—
In the pulse, the pause, the presence.

Transform this routine into grace,
This suffering into sanctity,
This body into a vessel of Your peace.

Amen.

It’s often difficult to sit on dialysis, but taking the time to think about it, to pray about it does help.
